Introduction
Its a known fact that there are more black people in jail and prisons than white people.
According to Bureau of Justice Statistics as at 2011, about 38% of federal prisoners are blacks against 34% for whites
Question: Why are there more black people in jail and prisons than white people despite their population proportion? (Whites 65%, Blacks, 13% as at 2010, Census Bureau)
War on drugs policy introduced by the government in 1980 which introduced harsher sentences that negatively impacted black people
Socioeconomic status of black people which means black people are poorer and not able to put up bail as against their white counterparts as well as black people have prior criminal records where they are refused bail.
The Importance of this study is to examine criminal justice policies and how they affect the different races. I wanted to do this topic because this type of information is not given attention and I would like to raise awareness.
